And to think, it all started with baking powder…

The Edmonds brand has long been a part of New Zealand.

Arriving in NZ in 1879, Thomas Edmonds and his wife Jane purchased and ran a grocery shop in Woolston, in Christchurch.

He soon identified a need for a reliable brand of baking powder and devoted his energies to experimenting. Prompted by his customers and testimonials, Thomas placed the perfected baking powder on the market and waited for demand to develop. After three months, merchants still had not ordered any more of his Baking Powder.

So Edmonds began to canvas the local Canterbury region, leaving a tin of baking powder with almost every householder in the region, whether they wished to buy it or not, agreeing to take it back on his next visit if they were not satisfied. Apparently no tins were returned.

One day a doubting customer asked if the baking powder was any good. Thomas replied “It is Sure to Rise, Madam”, and struck with the aptness of his own remarks, used it to design the famous trade mark with the rising sun.
