After struggling to get an overdraft to start the business, once they opened they were run off their feet. Three months later, after working two jobs round the clock, Anup left his day job to run Tandoori Palace full-time. The next few years were spent working on the shop floor, doing everything from waiting tables to washing pots. All the time Anup was talking to the customers, always listening to what they wanted.

Jump ahead to 2008 and the business has grown to 8 Indian restaurants and takeaways in Christchurch, Queenstown and Rotorua and now also boasts an authentic range of traditional Indian simmer sauces. Anup`s search for a New Zealand manufacturer with the expertise to make and market the product range led him to the family business of Barker`s in Geraldine. A joint venture was formed…..all done on a handshake with Michael Barker. Anup and Michael worked together for a year before any papers were signed – an indication of Anup and Michael`s traditional business values.

The Tandoori Palace range is now sold in supermarkets nationwide (and recently voted “most authentic” by other restaurateurs in a blind tasting on Target).
The Tandoori Palace range of Simmer Sauces includes Butter Chicken, Spicy Butter Chicken, Korma, Rogan Josh, Tikka Masala and Vindaloo, together with the newly created Tandoori Paste.
