Wry, witty and not afraid to pull punches, Smart Mouth Eats Auckland is the first in a series of iPhone applications intended to be used as “best of” guides to Antipodean cities.
Combining incredibly smooth functionality with a simple, sexy design, Eats Auckland is poised to become a benchmark for how good apps everywhere should work.
With an emphasis on great-value dining in The City of Sails, this app gives the low-down on a variety of establishments, from the chic-and-sleek to the down-and-dirty, and everything in between.
The app kicks off with around 60 entries, with updated content poised to follow. It can be downloaded from the iTunes store for $4.19.
The brainchild of Auckland food marketer Antony Suvalko and Sydney based food and travel writer Leanne Kitchen, the apps’ content is opinionated and at times funny.
“We’re not seeking to review places as such” they say. “We’re not giving any establishments ratings or points. Rather we simply want to point people in the right direction for where to eat, depending on their mood and budget, give them some meaningful hard information (addresses, websites etc) and have a little fun along the way.”
The pair, who are both ex-chefs, say the content will be frequently refreshed. To assist with this, they are constructing an on-line community around Eats Auckland.
“We want to hear peoples’ comments and suggestions for other places to include in the future – this is just our take on Auckland and we expect we’ve missed some absolute gems. Eats Auckland is very much a work in progress”.
