Food consumer group Choice says mince pies are far from choice!

New Zealand’s national food, a piping hot meat pie with tomato sauce, contains worrying levels of trans fats, says research by consumer group Choice shows.

A hazardous level of trans fats was found in 12 pie favourites analysed by the Choice consumer group, including Four’n Twenty Traditional Meat Pies, Pampas Short Crust Pastry and McDonald’s McCafe Pies and Donuts,

Across the Tasman in Australia, trans fats, linked with heart disease and diabetes, do not have to be listed on food labels.

Choice spokesman Christopher Zinn says clearer labelling is needed.
