Nestlé New Zealand has just launched their new Nescafe Greenblend, an instant coffee that delivers 70% more antioxidant polyphenols than green tea.

This green tea coffee innovation is a first for the coffee category in this country – the only instant coffee in New Zealand to boast a unique blend of green and roasted coffee beans, while not compromising the taste.

Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition supports that although a cup of green tea contains similar levels of antioxidant polyphenols, the body absorbs 70% more antioxidants from NESCAFÉ® Greenblend than from green tea.

“Through the careful combination of roasted and unroasted coffee beans, new NESCAFÉ® Greenblend has a full coffee taste and aroma and along with delivering 70% more antioxidant polyphenols than green tea, Kiwis now have another reason to enjoy a cup of instant coffee every day”, said Susan Kevork, Nestlé Nutritionist.

“Discerning coffee drinkers will notice that the delivery of 70% more antioxidants to your body than green tea doesn’t compromise the taste and aroma of NESCAFÉ® Greenblend.”

“Coffee in moderation – 3-4 cups a day – as part of a balanced diet can contribute positively to health and wellbeing. Coffee can be associated with feelings of increased energy, motivation, alertness and concentration,” said Ms Kevork.

NESCAFÉ® Greenblend will offer Kiwi coffee drinkers looking to make more informed purchase decisions for themselves and their families, an extra reason to indulge in their beloved cup of coffee.

NESCAFÉ® Greenblend is now available in supermarkets across New Zealand.

About the research:
·         The claim is based on the publication ‘Plasma appearance and correlation between coffee and green tea metabolites in human subjects’ (Renouf, M. et al. British J Nutrition, 2010; 104(11): 1635-40.)
·         The levels of antioxidant polyphenols present in blood samples were measured and compared over 12 hours after consumption of the beverages, under carefully controlled conditions. The concentrations of antioxidant polyphenols measured in the blood samples were 70% higher after consumption of NESCAFÉ® Greenblend than after consumption of the green tea.

About NESCAFÉ® Greenblend:
·         NESCAFÉ® Greenblend is made like regular instant coffee with the exception of the use of some unroasted (‘green’) coffee beans in addition to roasted coffee beans. Although the unroasted coffee beans are a very light green colour, the end product/blend appears similar to regular coffee.
·         NESCAFÉ® Greenblend is available in 100g RRP $11.99 and is available in supermarkets across New Zealand.
