Puhoi Valley took out the top awards for both feta and washed rind cheeses at the prestigious New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards in March.

Innovation, team work, and dedication to creating quality cheeses are what drives the continuing success of the Puhoi Valley Cheese Company, which was awarded five gold medals, five silver, and five bronze medals across its outstanding range of cheeses.

The company picked up the top awards in the following categories:

  • Puhoi Valley Cows’ Milk Feta – Kiwi Labels Champion Feta Cheese Award
  • Puhoi Valley Cellar Range Washed Rind – Thermaflo Champion Washed Rind Cheese Award


It’s another impressive haul for the cheese makers – led by Head Cheese Maker, Franck Beaurain.

“We are very proud of our achievements in washed rind and feta this year,” says Franck. “We believe that the washed rind will be a very popular cheese over the next three years because of its irresistible strong earthy aroma and lingering flavour.

“With our feta, we have developed a cheese which has a consistent creamy texture, and fresh acidic mild flavour.  We think it is best in class and are pleased that the judges agree.”

Originally from Normandy in France, Franck has 30 years’ experience in making specialty cheeses.
