Wine connoisseurs are now able to enjoy a unique shopping experience as an upmarket wine destination like no other launches in Auckland today.
The Wine Cave, a stunning new retail space in Newmarket, opens its doors on Wednesday 18 October and lead the way in fine wine appreciation. Established by a small team of entrepreneurs, it boasts an exceptional array of high-end experiences for discerning wine, beer and spirits enthusiasts, as well as a selection of quality wines and wine experiences at affordable prices.
The lavish 554 square metre space features architecturally designed interiors that help to create a luxurious atmosphere. Upon entering The Wine Cave, visitors will be welcomed in the reception area. From there, they’ll be assisted in the dedicated store and tasting area (The main show room), or escorted to the exclusive wine and spirits vault, (The Wine Vault) accessible only by a swipe card. There’s also a multi-purpose warehouse space, complete with commercial kitchen and semi-open vintage-chic function area, available for hire and for private functions.
The Wine Cave co-founder and managing director Joe Wang says the new venture hopes to become New Zealand’s foremost wine store and a go-to destination with the best selection of beverages the country has to offer.
“We’re bringing some smart new ideas to the sector, including advanced mobile shopping technology, a membership club and integrated tasting and personalised services,” he says.
“The Wine Cave is at the cutting edge of wine and beverage retail, both in-store and online, and we’re confident it will become a must-visit destination for those keen to savour the very best that New Zealand wine has to offer, as well as those who simply want to combine quality with an affordable wine from one of New Zealand’s many spectacular, but less known boutique vineyards.”
The unique retail area in Newmarket’s Carlton Gore Road is comprised of several upmarket experiences:
The Main Show Room (The Wine Cave) main picture
Home to 435 wines, 60 spirits, and a small selection of craft beers, the selection will change regularly with wines sourced in small quantities, primarily from New Zealand boutique vineyards. Some of the wines have previously only been available at selected restaurants.
The Wine Cave’s main show room showcases the beauty of these wine bottles en masse. The impressive timber shelving grid lines the perimeter of the showroom. Beautiful diffused light is achieved by back-lit shelves designed to reflect light off the wine bottles. The rigour of the grid continues over the ceiling with expressed battens and angled LED tube lights arranged in rhythmic pattern forming the feature lighting across the space. With an eight-metre table centred in the room for wine-tasting, the overall effect is a theatrical cave that makes wine the star.
Expect to find wines from Bell Hill, Felton Road, back vintage release of Dry River, From single vineyard, Escarpment Kupe, Destiny Bay, Te Motu and Bilancia Syrah and many others. Large format bottles such as magnums are also available and ideal for gifting.
Alongside the selection of world-class beverages, premium brands such as Spieglau & Riedel stemware, and wine associated gift items are available for that special someone; gift baskets and vouchers will also be available for purchase online and in store.
Tastings in The Wine Cave
Every month, there are 16 new wines selected by The Wine Cave’s Sommelier team for customers to taste via a EuroCave wine dispenser, the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Tastings start from $10 per person.
The Tasting Space is complete with television for golf / sports fans, team building exercises or functions. Tastings can be booked both during, and outside of opening hours and are designed to be fun and informative sessions led by one of The Wine Cave specialists. Cheese and charcuterie platters are available for customers to purchase during their tasting sessions.
From November onwards, customers and members will be able to join or pre- book for every Wednesday evening tasting programme designed by The Wine Cave team, full information online at winecave.nz.
The Wine Vault
The Wine Vault, a VIP room, is designed to be an intimate space built with a limited palette of rich, dark tones and only ambient light. Surrounded by more than 900 bottles of wine, 60 premium spirits and fine glassware, The Wine Vault features comfortable lounge chairs for guests to curl up in while enjoying the selection of wine on offer.
The store’s most premium wines are kept in The Wine Vault, an area accessible only by swipe card. Staff will accompany customers who wish to peruse and purchase these premium wines and spirits while VIP members can also use this area to host guests, drink wine and enjoy the private butler service.
The Multi-Purpose Warehouse space
The Wine Cave’s warehouse doubles as a spacious room to serve as a function space for large groups, cocktail parties or wine dinner events catering for 70 standing and 40 seated. The venue is available for hire; companies can bring in their own chef or use catering partner, Dawson’s catering.
To transform the working warehouse into an event space, two extended banquet tables are crowned with vintage-chic features creating an intimate dining experience. The design incorporates delicate fairy lights set amidst rows of translucent drapery with cloud-like spheres of white paper lanterns that make for a romantic atmosphere.
The Membership Scheme
The Wine Cave membership programme has three tiers, Silver, Gold and Black with customers earning wine dollars for every $6 spent. The programme entitles members to exclusive benefits including access to special offers, free tasting events, special event room hire rates and for the Black tier, a private butler service.
Architecturally designed by P-A-C
P-a-c architect Liz Tjahjana says she is pleased with the end result:
“The design of the Wine Cave celebrates the collection and display of wine. Our response was to create a sophisticated, immersive wine experience centred on showcasing the beauty of the wine bottles as an ensemble.”
The Wine Cave is due to open its doors and usher in a new era of wine retailing from October 18th. www.winecave.nz.
