The Vegery, an artisan health food kitchen in Whangaparaoa, Auckland Northshore, has been creating high quality, nutritious products to cater for dairy-free, gluten-free, paleo, vegetarians and vegans. Their unique products are becoming more and more well known through word of mouth of the health conscious community.

Kathryn Jansen, the Vegery’s director and head chef, is always talking to people and trying to create new products that meet their needs. Her latest creation is The Banana and Carrot with Acai Berry Wrap, an answer to the repeated requests from parents for a more “child-friendly” addition to the product range.

“The Carrot with Cumin and The Carrot with Turmeric are both quite ‘earthy’ flavours,” Kathryn explains. “They’re also made with linseeds which are high in fibre. Both these factors appeal to adults, but potentially not-so ideal for younger eaters.”

The Banana and Carrot with Acai Berry Wrap has a more neutral flavour so that it can carry either sweet or savoury fillings. It is made with a combination of sunflower seeds and linseeds, thus maintaining optimal nourishment but reducing the amount of fibre, and therefore making it gentler on the digestion. As with all The Vegery’s Vitality Wraps, these products are made in a dehydrator rather than being baked, so that they keep the nutritional benefits of raw food.

The Banana with Carrot and Acai Berry is The Vegery’s fourth Vitality Wrap. Its complete ingredients are banana, carrot, carrots, acai berries, Himalayan rock salt, linseeds, sunflower seeds, coconut.

“It’s perfect for a child’s school lunchbox; you really can pack the goodness,” enthuses Kathryn. “How about egg mayo salad, or sliced chicken with veges. I had one for lunch yesterday with cold roast chicken, beetroot and coleslaw. It was delicious – even if I do say so myself!”

All Vitality Wraps are dairy-free, paleo, suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and prepared in The Vegery’s dedicated Whangaparaoa kitchen, which is gluten-free and vegan. They are approved by Coeliac New Zealand to be a Crossed Grain logo partner. The carrot with turmeric wrap was a finalist in the 2016 NZ Food Awards.
