Sleep deprivation is defined as not obtaining adequate total sleep. When someone is a chronic sleep-restricted state they’ll notice excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, clumsiness, and weight gain or loss. In addition, being sleep deprived affects both the brain and cognitive function.

The creation of the Sleep Apothecary range from Matakana Botanicals has been curated to aid in the deprivation of sleep and lack of concentration.

Matakana Botanicals are uniquely equipped to grow, harvest and distil many of the hero ingredients used throughout all their ranges, inclusive of the most prominent – the natural sleep aid – lavender.

Hand harvested in Matakana around March every year, the lavender is steam distilled on site to extract the essential oil.

Through a thorough process, the lavender oil then rests for six months before being used in a range of Matakana Botanicals products including the unique apothecary sleep range.

An herb that can be traced back over 2000 years ago, it is widely used for sleep deprivation in New Zealand and around the world.

Studies show that 35 percent of Kiwis either do not get enough sleep or experience a poor standard of sleep on a nightly basis. Researchers* have found that lavender increased slow slow-wave sleep, the very deep slumber in which the heartbeat slows and muscles relax. During this phase, the brain is thought to organise memory, as well.

The apothecary range blends were created with Mary Wakefield, one of New Zealand’s leading aroma therapists. Each sniff box contains aroma beads and essence that have been infused with a special aromatherapy blend.

The range is a calming blend of Neroli, Camomile, and Lavender essential oils. Danvers Devereux, owner of Matakana Botanicals discloses “the range is a calming blend which will aid anyone to a long and restful night’s sleep”.

The amenity sized products are used on-board Emirates Airlines First Class. The new range includes: Pillow Mist, Body Lotion, Massage Lotion, Sniff Boxes, Sleep Balm and Oils.
