His wines have earned ninety points and higher from leading global wine publications, and he’s the only winemaker to be named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine (2009) and Wine Enthusiast (2014) but you wouldn’t guess it by looking at him. Bold, edgy and unorthodox– Charles Smith’s wines are a bit like the man himself, offering something very unexpected.
Charles started life as a rock band manager and began his love affair with wine by entertaining music industry heavy weights.
In 1999, he moved to Washington State to fulfil his burgeoning passion for wine and met a French winemaker who had similar aspirations. From there, Charles Smith wines were born. He may not have a classically trained palate, but his brazen personality, full-flavoured wines and bold packaging have earned him the moniker of “Rock Star Winemaker of Washington State”
“The intent is to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with typicity of variety and true to the place of origin. The wines are full of flavour, balanced and approachable.”
–Charles Smith,Rock Star Winemaker of Washington State
Charles Smith Wines are all sourced from small, grower-owned vineyards located in four prime sub-regions within Washington State’s Columbia Valley.
The Washington State wine region is located in the northwest corner of the United States, second only to California in production size. The state’s northerly location is above the 46th parallel, which is in line with the well-known French winegrowing regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. The region enjoys 17 hours of sunlight in the summer, cool nights and very little rainfall, producing wines that are very fruit-forward, like California wine, but which also retain some of the balance and structure of European wine.
