Internationally renowned Barossa winery Peter Lehmann Wines is proud to release the second vintage of THE Barossan for New Zealand wine drinkers to enjoy.
Following on from the success of the inaugural 2015 vintage, THE Barossan 2016 continues to showcase quintessential Barossa Shiraz. As with the first vintage, it was crafted by the next generation of Peter Lehmann winemakers Nigel Westblade and Tim Dolan, and showcases the quality and diversity of the Barossa – one of Australia’s most iconic wine regions.
A born and bred Barossan, Tim respects the tradition and integrity of Barossa Shiraz and has carefully selected the fruit which he feels best represents his beloved region to create this distinctive wine. THE Barossan speaks of its origins – the unique terroir, topography and mesoclimates that the Barossa is celebrated for.
Fruit for THE Barossan was sourced from some of the longest standing grower families in the Barossa; third, fourth and fifth generation growers from the many fabled sub-regions across the Barossa Valley that share pristine grapes from mature vineyards.
The 2016 vintage began warm and dry, with one magnificent rain event at the end of January. This was perfectly timed for veraison and flavour development of the fruit.
After harvest, the fruit was fermented and macerated on skins for up to two weeks, with partial barrel fermentation. Following processing and clarification, the wine matured in a combination of American and French hogsheads for 12 months prior to bottling.
Crafting The Barossan, Tim Dolan said the winemaking team identified varying interpretations of Shiraz to blend together seamlessly, delivering a complex and layered wine with fruit intensity and suppleness. Aromas of fresh plum and dark chocolate-dipped cherries combine seamlessly with flavours of brooding dark fruit, warm spices and sweet mocha undertones. Soft and mature tannins provide a soft and generous finish.
Presenting a range of premium Peter Lehmann wines in New Zealand recently, including THE Barossan, Brand Ambassador Malcolm Stopp said; “Shiraz is the signature variety for the Barossa and Peter Lehmann Wines. Peter Lehmann winemakers have been crafting iconic, award-winning Barossan Shiraz since 1980. THE Barossan is an excellent example of how Barossa Shiraz has evolved from big, bold, robust wines to softer and well-rounded styles displaying elegant bright fruit and fine tannins.”
He continues; “I’m delighted to be able to share this wine with New Zealand wine drinkers. With Peter Lehmann Wines’ reputation for Shiraz and long-standing relationships with generations of family growers, some of the best fruit in the region has been sourced for this blend. A natural progression in quality and complexity from our Portrait range, this wine takes the classic style of Barossa Shiraz to the next level.”
THE Barossan is rich and full-bodied so is the perfect complement to the flavours of slow-roasted barbecued steak or braised meat.
Peter Lehmann THE Barossan is widely available all good supermarkets and specialty retailers for an RRP of $24.99.
