Mission Estate’s 2018 Sauvignon Blanc has received a Blue Gold Award at The Sydney International Wine Competition. A step above a Gold Award, the Blue Gold Award is associated with prestige and excellence.
The International Wine Competition, now in its 34th year, is comprised of an International Panel of Judges, drawn from Australia, New Zealand, Europe, USA, and Singapore. Judges assess 2,000 wine entries and ultimately judge each wine based on how it complements a range of dining situations.
The wines are judged via a three-phase blind judging system. In the third phase, finalists in food-friendly style categories are judged beside food dishes of similar palate weight. The Sauvignon Blanc finalists were paired with a light entrée of roasted cauliflower with cashew puree, buckwheat and dukkah.
Paul Mooney, Winemaker at Mission Estate, says, “Wine has a long history of being a staple at the dinner table, and when matched correctly to food it can enhance the flavours of a meal. It’s great to see our Sauvignon Blanc recognised internationally amongst wines that are most compatible with food, as this is how we hope our wine will be enjoyed, with friends and family over a delicious meal.”
Founder of The International Competition, Warren Mason, says, “Our judges are often surprised by the difference in their score for the wine-as-wine assessment and their score for the same wine when judged as a complement to food.”
Harvested from Mission Estate’s Cable Station Road Vineyard, in Marlborough, the Sauvignon Blanc has, very intense flavours. The bouquet has fresh grapefruit, floral, herbal and passionfruit aromas. It’s perfectly paired with light dishes such as grilled fish and fresh summer salads. Try a roast cauliflower salad with buckwheat and dukkah, as enjoyed by the judges.
