The New Zealand Winery Tour™ continues as Wine Monster heads to the legendary Pegasus Bay Winery in February. Based in Waipara, North Canterbury, Pegasus Bay is proudly 100% family owned and their wines are frighteningly good.

Wine Monster was launched by three mates (Dan, Adam and Gareth) at the end of last year responding to the fact that so many people find the subject of wine monstrous. Wine Monster has tamed the beast and travelled the length and breadth of the country to make it easy for you to discover regions, blends and grapes you’ve never heard of and drops you never thought you’d try delivered straight to your door. Nothing scary about it.

Having ticked off wineries in Waiheke, Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay to date, Pegasus Bay’s Wine Monster Box will work in exactly the same way; you choose from white, red or mixed and six carefully selected wines will be delivered to your door with detailed tasting notes and drool worthy food match suggestions.

This month the headliner wines are the Vergence Red or the Vergence White and Gareth Stewart (one of the three mates) has created two stunning recipes to match. Depending what you go for you can plan to match your Vergence Red with a Canterbury lamb rack with sagg puree and curry butter. Or, if you’re more of a white wine drinker, there is a recipe for local burrata, marinated cantaloupe melon, salami and oregano to match the Vergence White.

If you’re into the idea of education, there are stunning tasting notes that explain why each recipe matches the wine perfectly. If that’s not your thing, just know that red wine goes great with red meat and white wine is fantastically matched with lighter cheeses and fruits – not scary at all, it’s just wine and food after all.

As Kiwis move to embrace shopping local, one of Wine Monster’s most unique features is the chance to learn about the winery’s story as told by them, something you don’t get when shopping in the supermarket.

How’s this for a story? Pegasus Bay was born when Ivan Donaldson was given a book simply called ‘Wine’ by his then girlfriend, now wife, Christine in the 1970s. An interest grew and he started making wine in his garage as a hobby/side hustle to his not so casual day job as a consulting neurologist. In the 1980s, after realising there might be something in this wine business, Pegasus Bay was planted and the rest is history. Fast forward nearly 50 years and Pegasus Bay is a fully fledged business with Christine and Ivan Donaldson’s four sons all working in key roles.
