New Zealand’s Supreme Pie is a Real Quacker!
Pie-lovers dedicated to their mince’n’cheese favourite might want to duck for cover - the 2023 Supreme Pie Award has gone to an innovative roast duck, onion and mushroom pie that “silenced the room” with its incredible flavour.
Pie-maker extraordinaire Patrick Lam, of Patrick's Pies Gold Star Bakery in Bethlehem, Tauranga, has racked up his eighth Supreme title at the Bakels NZ Pie Awards with this pie. And, just to prove his pie making skills, Lam also secured gold in the Chicken & Vegetable and Vegetarian categories, and silver in Steak & Gravy.
Lam is convinced getting the pie basics right contributes to his success. "I think our pastry is very good," he said. It must be working for him - he’s still using the same pastry as he did for his first win 20 years ago.
With the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards celebrating their 25th year it seems timely to have something completely different take out the top award. The judging panel was certainly impressed. “It’s pretty amazing,” said celebrity judge Al Brown.
We think the win’s a real feather in Lam’s cap.
