South African Bobotie - Fresh Ideas
Try something different with this delicious traditional Bobotie South African dish. While it does take a while to cook just remember good (and tasty) things come to those who wait.

Ingredients
 
 

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 1 kg ground beef lean
  • 1 slice white bread
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp medium curry powder
  • 1 ½ tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp freshly grated pepper
  • ¾ tsp turmeric
  • 1 ½ tbsp malt vinegar
  • ½ cup seedless raisins
  • 2 tbsp strong chutney
  • 2 bay leaves or fresh lemon leaves if available
  • 2 medium eggs

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 175°C.
  • Heat oil in medium sauté pan.
  • Peel and chop the onions and then stir them into the hot pan. Cook over medium heat until transparent.
  • Add the ground beef and cook until lightly browned and crumbly.
  • Soak bread in half the milk, squeeze out excess milk and mash with a fork.
  • Set milk aside. Mix mashed bread to the meat mixture.
  • Add curry, sugar, salt, pepper, turmeric, vinegar, raisins, chutney to the beef mixture.
  • Spoon the mixture into a greased baking dish, and place bay leaves on top.
  • Bake for 30 minutes. Beat egg with remaining milk and pour over mixture.
  • Bake for a further 30 minutes.
  • Serve with steamed rice and extra chutney.
