Toffee apples
Anyone born before the 80's would remember these Toffee apples from fairs and gala days. Yummy. Although still sugary, they have a lovely crisp, fresh apple in the middle.
Ingredients
- 8 small red apples
- 1 ½ cups caster sugar
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- ½ cup water
- 6 drops red food colouring
- 8 lollypop sticks
Instructions
- Wash apples and dry throughly. Remove any stalk and push stick into the centre of each apple.
- In a heavy-based saucepan place the sugar, water and vinegar and heat gently for 5 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved.
- Turn up the heat and boil vigorously for approximately 8 minutes until the toffee just starts to turn golden. Test to see if the toffee is going to set (every minute after 6 minutes) by getting a small amount on a teaspoon and dribbling into a glass of cold water. When the threads are hard, it's ready.
- Remove from heat and add food colouring. Dip in the apples into the toffee and twirl each apple to make sure it is well coated and the excess drips off. Place the toffee apple on grease proof paper to cool.
Notes
Be careful when adding food colouring and dipping apples—the hot toffee mixture can be very dangerous.
